‘Fallout 76’ announced after a hype-filled Twitch stream, but what is it?

There’s a new… something happening in the Fallout universe, and it’s called Fallout 76.

Bethesda Softworks’ Todd Howard, who serves as one of the creative leads on the Fallout series, announced the project at the end of a hype-filled Twitch stream. He didn’t go into any detail on what Fallout 76 is, but he did share this teaser trailer.

The Fallout wiki identifies Vault 76, a setting revealed in this trailer, as a location that’s been mentioned in multiple games, including Fallout 3 and its Mothership Zeta expansion, as well as Fallout 4.

But what is it? In Fallout lore, Vaults are underground facilities built by a company called Vault-Tec. Outwardly, they were designed to house the human race in the event of a world-ending war or natural event. In reality, they were built as a series of different human test environments.  Read more…
